What is a Computer Virus?
A computer virus is a code that can enter the computer system and potentially bring the computer to a non-working state.
The virus code can enter a computer system in many ways; through a file downloaded to the computer and installed without the user knowing its content; through an email attachment that has been opened; even just browsing a web page!
All computer viruses are distributed to do one thing – Destroy data!
How do I know if my computer has a virus?
You must remember that there are very many things that can go wrong with your computer and a virus is not always to blame.
The only way you can know whether or not your computer is infected is by scanning your machine with an up to date anti-virus program.
How do I protect my computer against viruses?
Installing a good anti-virus application is a very important item on your list. Above all else, this is the one thing you should have. Even a standalone computer, never connected to the internet, should have anti-virus software installed, just in case someone puts in that CD or old floppy disk that contains a virus!
When choosing anti-virus software, it's very easy to assume that they all do a good job, but put simply, they don't! Some questions you should be asking of the software are: Does it integrate into your email application? Does it work with your firewall? How often do updates get released? Does it have an emergency bootable disk just in case you can't start your computer? Will it slow down my computer to a crawl?
All these things are important and you should check that list out before you settle for any old anti-virus package.
